Internal Auditor
Reports to: Chief Internal Auditor
Job Purpose:
To independently lead, review and conduct internal audits within Shell Oman Marketing Company (SOM) to provide an independent appraisal and assurance to the Chief Internal Auditor (CIA) and other stakeholders on the adequacy of the company’s internal control framework and systems; and assurance of its compliance with the relevant laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and standards based on the agreed Annual Assurance & Advisory Plan.
Principal Accountabilities:
Corporate Governance and Legal/Regulatory compliance
- Reviewing the effectiveness of the SOM’s code of conduct and ethics policies,
- Evaluating the compliance with the corporate governance process and prepare a report on the results of the evaluation, and
- Conduct review of any unaudited Financial Statements and comment thereon before their disclosure to the public.
- Managing the Governance Day event, including planning, coordination, and ensuring alignment with corporate governance objectives.
Internal controls and Audits
- Assist CIA in developing risk-based audit plan to determine the priorities of the internal audit activity, consistent with the organization’s goals,
- Review and examine the procedures and internal control of SOM, which have been designed and implemented to ensure SOM’s compliance with the legal requirements, the internal regulation of SOM and the procedures of the SOM. In addition, identifying areas of improvement in the internal controls and to recommend appropriate procedures to rectify the gaps,
- Review the information security system and control system, including applications control system to protect the security, integrity and confidentiality of the company’s data,
- Lead/conduct independent audits of SOM’s internal processes, key risk areas and other subjects deemed important by the Board Audit and Risk Committee (BARC) in line with the Global Internal Audit Standards (GIAS) issued by the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) that are compliant with the regulations issued by the Financial Services Authority (FSA),
- Ensure that audits are completed, and reports issued as per the agreed timelines,
- Review the implementation of Circular No. E/1/2022 titled “Issuing Information Security Guidelines for Public Joint Stock Companies”,
- Assess the design of processes and systems to ensure that adequate internal controls are in place,
- Conduct follow up observations and audits to monitor the resolved issues that may have been identified through audit findings, and
- Reviewing the ways and means to safeguard the SOM assets.
- Continuously learn and stay updated on emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), and leverage these advancements to enhance audit methodologies, improve efficiency, and strengthen risk assessment processes. Actively share knowledge and best practices with the audit team to foster innovation and capability building.
Risk Management
- Promoting the awareness of risk management issues,
- Identify risk management issues and internal controls deficiencies, coordinate with Management and discuss findings for their respective areas including corrective actions and recommendations for implementation to enhance the performance of the company.
- Monitoring for new and emerging risks facing the company and the external environment by reviewing relevant studies and publications, such as Risk in Focus, and incorporating insights into risk assessments and audit planning.
Other Responsibilities
- Process payments of relevant vendors (e.g. internal audit firm and audit management system).
- Input and manage data of Audit Management System (AMS).
- Assist CIA in developing and maintain a Quality Assurance and Improvement Program (QAIP) that covers all aspects of the Internal Audit (IA) activity.
- Assist CIA in preparation of BARC meeting slides and administration.
- Collaborate with the external auditors to provide all necessary information and cooperation that is expected from an internal auditor as per the terms of the International Standards on Auditing (ISA),
- Conduct consultancy services,
- Investigate any frauds/fraudulent incidents as decided by BARC/ Board, and
- Any other functions as decided by the BARC/ Board, which should not conflict with the roles of the Internal Auditor or affect their objectivity and independence.
Key Challenges:
The internal audit role will require the incumbent to lead direct and indirect teams and work towards a tight deadline for delivery.
Job Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
Regulatory Mandatory Requirements
- As per FSA circular no. 27/2021, the internal auditor shall: have a certificate of chartered accountant or professional certificate in internal audit or information technology audit. The Omani national who doesn’t meet this requirement may be appointed if he has a bachelor degree in accounting or finance or information technology or any other field related to the company’s business, provided he should have undergone a minimum of twelve (12) months training.
Other Requirements:
- Preferably Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), or Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), or Chartered Internal Auditor (CMIIA), and
- Minimum 3 years of Internal Audit experience.
