Shell Oman Participates in Oman Environment Day
Aiming to target children in their formative years and raise their awareness on environment related issues a painting competition and an operate by school children was also organised. An exhibition highlighting measures adopted by various organisations operating in the Sultanate to protect the environment was unveiled on this occasion.
At this exhibition Shell Oman showcased the various initiatives taken to protect the environment and support ongoing programmes by the concerned organisations. Among the many steps taken two were highlighted at this exhibition. To prevent damage to the soil or groundwater special double sided tanks are used for storing fuel at both the service stations and at their depot. Air pollution, which is a growing concern all over, is also addressed by using vapour recovery techniques at all storage areas.
Shell Oman actively supports environment projects like the Biosphere expedition for the search of the Arabian Leopard, or marine life projects aimed at studying whales and dolphins found in the Sultanate. In addition, Shell employees participate in the beach and coral reef cleaning activities organised at different times by the Ministry of Environment.
Abdulwahid Al-Farsi, External Affairs Manager of Shell Oman said “Shell has always been the frontrunner when it comes to issues of protecting the environment. We are a responsible company, which has taken numerous steps time and again involving various technologies and processes. These events are excellent platforms to spread the message of environment protection and how each one of us can make a difference.”
Every year Shell Oman participates as a main sponsor to commemorate Oman Environment Day on 8 January. First established in 1995 the Oman Environment Day has gained more prominence with each year. Every year the Ministry of Environment has used this prominent occasion to promote community awareness on the importance of the environment and its prevention.
